Can you believe graduation season is upon us! I have received two college graduation and three high school graduation announcements.

Where has time gone?

As I start to ponder about what gift I should give, I reflected back on my college days…what could I have used.  I heard someone say that we have a choice to take something that most people dread, and change it into a motivating factor.

The alarm clock….which this person called it the “Opportunity Clock”.

When does an alarm go off? When something bad is happening! Well, waking up isn’t bad. Walking up is good! Infact, waking up is an opportunity. Each new day brings with it the opportunity to enjoy our families and other people. It enables us the opportunity to work hard, and earn a living that will enable us in turn to provide our families. (excerpt from C. Widener)

We get the opportunity each day to dream and achieve those dreams.

The conclusion is that I will get each of the new graduates an “Opportunity Clock”, with a short note, reminding them that they are 100% responsible for the choices in their life.

Follow your Dream…and Don’t Give Up! You may fall a few times, that’s OK…just get back up, dust yourself off, and try it again; until you Succeed!

I followed my dream, I always wanted to work for myself, be my own boss, work when I want, from where I want… it took me a few years, but then I got it! And I did something about it.

If you want to find out more about what I do, visit my website and be sure to fill in the box with your name and email address – I’ll even send you a FREE Marketing report.

It’s all in the outlook and attitude.

It won't surprise you to learn that I'm not a proponent of the victim mentality. I believe strongly that the life you and I are living right now is the life we've created. It's based on the decisions and the choices we've made over the years. We're simply living with the consequences of those choices.

Peter Drucker said: "The best way to get the future we want is to create it." If you're genuinely interested in improving your current circumstances, start thinking of what you'll have to do to get the results you want. The reality is you're in charge of what you say and what you think. You decide what goes into your mind by the choices of what you watch, what you read and the people you associate with.

In order to be successful, or to improve performance and productivity in any area of life, all you need to do is act in ways that produce more of what you want. Life gives feedback. All we have to do is pay attention.

Don't like your work environment?

What did you do to create it?

What can you do to change it?

Not happy with your current physical condition?

What did you do to create it?

What can you do to change it?

Not happy with your relationship with ________ ?

What did you do to create it?

What can you do to change it?

Success and failure both leave clues. We can play the blame game all day long or we can accept the fact that the common denominator in our success or failure is US! Don't like your current reality? Pick up a mirror and meet the one person who can change it.

Why Reading Biographies is Important

Why You Must Read Biographies by Ron White

"Don't worry boy, it will be alright. I've took this road you are walkin' down. I've been in your shoes. It is just somethin' that you have got to go through. I had this same talk with my dad."

Those were the words I heard from my dad at the age of twelve, when my heart had flushed my eyes with tears because the life of my dog was flickering out. Through the years I have taken walks down the same road with my dad and I've heard different versions of the same speech when business was tough, friendships ended or I wasn't feeling my best.

Sometimes it is nice to know that what you are going through isn't an experience unique to you. There is comfort in knowing that others have been there and there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Often, when you are in the midst of the tunnel – the only thing that catches your focus is despair, discouragement and depression. Yet, it can turn your day around when someone ventures into the tunnel – walks with you and grabs your hand to say, “I've been here…hang in there. I turned out alright and you will as well.’

Unfortunately, we don't all have someone who will tread into the tunnel and walk beside with encouragement. This is why it is so important to read biographies! A biography is a unique way to have a successful person walk beside you as you examine the story of their life.  You will often be surprised that the most successful people of all time experience the same struggles as you.

Einstein was divorced, Lincolnbattled depression, Ronald Reagan had his heart broken by his first wife and Sam Walton went broke twice. Where did I learn these facts? From the biographies I read! Did it make me feel better because they had hard times? Yes and no. I never delight in someone else's pain. On the other hand, it is without question that Einstein, Lincoln, Reagan and Walton were monumental successes. It is refreshing and inspiring to read that they were also human and have walked down the same road that you and I have.

What an encouragement it was when my business was struggling a few years ago to read Sam Walton's biography and my eyes halted on the page where I read that at the exact age I was – at that time – that he was in an almost identical financial spot! I put the book down and a smile spread across my face. If you don't know who Sam Walton is, he started a small company called Wal-Mart a few years ago and it turned out okay.

Reading Sam Walton's biography was a neat way for me to get inspired and reminded that some pretty successful people have met discouragement head on and succeeded. In a sense, while reading that book, a message from the spirit of Sam Walton said, “Ron – I have been there. It is hard, but don't give up. The reward is worth it. Now press on.’ I did and I will be forever glad that I did.

Now, go to the bookstore and pick up a biography. By the way, if you are in a rough spot or experiencing some heartache…….. "Don't worry boy, it will be alright. I've took this road you are walkin' down. I've been in your shoes. It is just somethin' that you have got to go through. I had this same talk with my dad."

How many times have you heard "Don't worry it will be alright"?

Last week I had this same conversation with my oldest daughter. She was trying out for the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader's (along with 870 other contestants) and didn't make the cut... when her number wasn't posted, all I wanted to do was wrap my arms around her and cry with her, because I knew that this was a huge step in her life and she wanted it more than anything.

But, as her Mom, I said those six little words... "Don't worry it will be alright", and reminded her that out of the five girls in her group, three of them were trying out for their second time. Statically, most have to tryout 2 or 3 times before making the DCC cheer team.

Her first reaction when we finally got to the car, was I'm not going to tryout again... but I keep reiterating that you did the best that you could and now know what to expect, and DON'T EVER GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMS!

The next day we talked about her experience and the wonderful friends that she made... and now she says she will try-out next year!

I am very proud of her, she is a strong person with a GREAT outlook on Life!

Five Success Keys

Five Success Keys

We could probably have an interesting discussion on the definition of success. The one I favor was authored by Earl Nightingale, more than fifty years ago: "Success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal."

I really like that definition because it takes money out of the equation unless it's your specific ideal. It says that the stay-at-home Mom is a success if she's staying home because she wants to. It says that a teacher, or a carpenter, or a Starbucks barista is a success if they are doing what they want to do instead of what they have to do.

Regardless of the field in which one is successful, there are criteria or keys for success that apply to every endeavor. Here are five of those Keys:

Essentials for Success and Achievement

1. Taking Personal Responsibility

Successful people don't play the blame game. They don't blame the government, the economy, their boss, their spouse, the traffic or anything else for the challenges they face or the obstacles the encounter. They take responsibility for their own behavior and figure out a way to deal with life's difficulties, which, by the way, are common to us all.

2. Seek Wisdom vs. Information

Napoleon Hill is famous for saying: "We become what we think about." You see he, and others before him, understood that our thoughts and our thinking will shape our behavior. The ideas you develop will one day manifest themselves in future behavior, so guard carefully what you think about and dwell on. Seek wisdom instead of information. Always be on the lookout for wise people and wisdom literature to help shape your thinking - and future actions.

3. Be a Person of Action

"The only measure of what you believe is what you do." Ashley Montagu coined those words over a century ago but the truth of that statement will stand forever. Success and achievement in any endeavor are the result of doing what needs to be done at the earliest possible opportunity. Do the most important things first!

4. Choose Joy Over Happiness

Happiness is often associated with circumstances. If I'm in a good place and things are going well, I'm happy. If things aren't going so well, I'm not.

Joy, on the other hand, starts with being at peace with ourselves. It's being comfortable in our own skin and understanding that, in most cases, "this too shall pass." The ups and downs of life are inevitable and experienced by everyone. Joy overrides unpleasant circumstances.

5. Stay Focused on Your Vision

Two essentials for success and achievement are vision and focus. Having a very clear vision of what we want to accomplish puts us in the top five percent of the marketplace and our competition. Staying focused on the vision and doing those things that move us to fulfilling our vision are what take us over the top.

Taking Stock

  1. Are you taking personal responsibility for your success and achievement?
  2. Do you have a friend or mentor you can trust to inject a little wisdom in your life from time to time?
  3. Are you a person of action? Are you doing the most important things first?
  4. Is your focus on joy or happiness?
  5. Is your eye on your vision or your circumstances?

After I read this, it really helped me have a clear vision of my goal. With a clear vision I can accomplish anything I choose. My my friends and mentor, Les Taylor wrote these "Five Success Keys".

A Young Psychology Student serving in the Army decided to test a theory. Drawing kitchen duty, he was given the job of passing out apricots at the end of the chow line.

He asked the first new soliders that came by, "You don't want any apricots, do you?" Ninety percent said, "No."

Then he tried the positive approach: "You do want apricots, don't you?" About half answered, "Uh, yeah, I'll take some."

Then he tried a third test, based on the fundamental either/or selling technique. This time he asked, "One dish of apricots or two?" And in spite of the fact that soldiers don't like Army apricots, 40 percent took two dishes and 50 percent took one!

"No, that's what God gave you two arms for: To carry me!" -- My five-year-old daughter

Chris' Commentary:
Okay, the conversation before this: I was walking a short distance with my then five- and six-year-old daughters. The five-year-old was dragging behind and complaining that she was tired. She said, "Dad, will you carry me?" I replied, "Nope, that's what God gave you two legs for: So you can walk." Then came her amazingly quick retort: "No, that's what God gave you two arms for: To carry me!" The lessons you learn from little ones!

Action Point:
What did God give you your arms for today? Take some time to be sure to build something beautiful or carry someone along or defend someone weak. Wave hello, lift something up that needs to be lifted or give someone a hug. Use your arms to make yourself successful today. Use your arms to help someone else. That's what God gave them to you for!

"A man who wants to lead the orchestra must turn his back on the crowd." ~ James Crook

Great Commentary:
I love quotes that are counter-intuitive because many times "counter-intuitive" is what works best in this world. This is especially true in leadership. If you think about it, there are only two options in life: Go with the crowd or against it. Those who will lead in this life must often start against the crowd and lead forcefully until the crowd sees the results and changes their direction. If you just go with the crowd, you are just part of the crowd. Even if you are going with the crowd but out in front of the crowd, that doesn't mean you are leading. It just means you are faster than the rest of the crowd! That means you're just better at being average - and that isn't what you want your life to be!

Action Point:
Think about your life. Are you going with the crowd or against it? Are you willing to lead by turning your back on the crowd? Take a step today to differentiate yourself from the crowd - and begin your journey toward success and leadership!

Chris' Commentary:
I don't always like quoting myself (perhaps I need a quote on humility?) but I accidentally said this in a speech I gave some time ago and I thought of how much truth there is in this statement. So much so, that I want to share it with you. Being a person of high character and low skills is okay, and people will respect you, which is good. You just won't achieve much. Low character and high skills will make people follow you or buy from you once - until they realize you have no character. The key to success is to have a high character and excellence in your skills. This two-pronged approach will make you a leader and enable you to soar high in life!

Action Point: Do you work a lot on your skills? Most people do. Take some time this week to work as much on your character as you do on your skills. This time you spend will return tenfold to you!

Chris’s Commentary:
No matter what great thing it is that you want to accomplish in life, you are going to need some wings to get there. And the bigger the thing it is that you want to accomplish, the bigger your wings need to be! So what are the wings that will lift you to this great success in your life? Imagination! Every accomplishment begins as an action or a series of repeated actions. Every action is driven by a thought. Our thoughts are reflections of what it is that we imagine. So imagine big, and you will think big. Think big, and you will take big actions. Take big actions, and your accomplishments will be big!

Action Point:
Take some time today to imagine the great successes you want to see in your life in the next few months. Spend some time dreaming! This will start a chain reaction that will lead to the actual accomplishment!
